Chapter Thirteen

INDIA LEXINGTON

“I don’t think that’s a good plan.” I couldn’t help but smile at the idea Lawson was proposing as we waited for Eugene to come back from the bar. I knew I probably could have gotten a drink—after all, it was my family’s event—but with my brother being the mayor, I wasn’t going to make a big show of standing at the bar when everyone knew I was eighteen.

“I do!” Lawson grinned. “It’s not like we have anything else to do all summer. We can even sail around a bit. Eugene is exhausted from classes. He won’t tell you that, but he is.”

“What won’t I tell her?” Eugene’s voice ran over my skin. I watched him curiously while he took a seat, setting down the two bottles of beer he held in one hand and the martini glass he held in the other. Next to their drinks, my sugar-rimmed lemon drop with its lemon twist garnish looked somewhat silly… It didn’t stop me from drinking it though.

“That you’re exhausted from classes and need a vacation—which would include the three of us heading to Greece for a few weeks,” Lawson explained, shooting him a pointed look.

Eugene opened his mouth to rebuff the accusation of being tired, but he quickly closed it, offering me a curious look. “If I say I’m tired, will you go?”

“I mean… If it’s for your mental health.” Even though I was giving Lawson a hard time about it, I really didn’t need much of an excuse to say yes.

“Then yes. I’m horribly exhausted.”

I let out a long, dramatic sigh. “Okay, you’ve convinced me.”

Lawson hopped up. “Going to tell your dad, be right back.”

“Why Greece?” I asked Eugene.

“You’ve been talking about it a lot lately.”

I had.

“Well, I’ll never say no to a vacation.” I very much wanted a break from being around my family anyway. All they’d been talking about lately was work. I didn’t mind it in theory, but with starting college this fall… I needed a real break from anything that didn’t include the Hearst brothers or sightseeing.

“And where are we going on vacation?”

The new voice had me rolling my eyes, and Eugene’s expression changed from one of happiness to one of pure disdain. I felt him capture my feet between his own, subtly pulling me closer as Brady Kline approached our table. The man had loads of fake confidence that I was positive most people bought into…but not me. I’d disliked him from the start, and with him being nearly my brother’s age, he really didn’t need to be talking to us. Yet somehow, no matter the event, he ended up finding us. Specifically, me.

“You aren’t traveling anywhere,” Eugene said. “Don’t even know what you’re doing here.”

Brady’s jaw tightened, ignoring Eugene and addressing me. “India, how have you been?”

“I’ve been okay.” I said dismissively as Eugene captured my hand on the table in a possessive move that had Kline’s brows going up. It didn’t surprise me completely; often the Hearst brothers would do things like this.
